Songs for a Better Future

Commissioned by the Drawing Room for their exhibition Best Laid Plans, Songs for a Better Future is a collaboration between Romanian visual artist Matei Bejenaru and Will Dutta.

Songs for a Better Future is a modernistic exploration of choir music.  It draws on musical themes from proletarian choir songs and the idealisation of the worker in communism to electronic music songs of the 1970s and the fetishization and idealisation of the technological progress in the Western world.

The premiere took place at the Drawing Room followed by a performance in the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall in Autumn 2010 with singers from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.
